Do you think it comes down to the skill of networking, or lack thereof? Sometimes I feel people in academia, particularly of quantitative disciplines, do not put enough emphasis on these kinds of skills. As a result, students do not always know how to do it properly because of lack of practice. I might be entirely wrong as my observation is based on rather limited exposure, but this is what I felt.
